Context

Born in Finland in 1946, Ralf Gothoni is a pianist who has played in the great theatres of Europe and the United States. He has given concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Japan, the English Chamber Orchestra where he was named director and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Chicago etc. He has taught in Helsinki, Hamburg, Berlin, London and Sofia. Ralf Gothoni is also a chamber musician, a conductor and composer: three chamber operas, one cantataThe Ox and its Shepherd. His repertoire is wide ranging: Schubert, Schumann, Mussorgsky, Brahms, Mahler, Janacek, Strauss, Sibelius, Britten, Schnittke and lesser known Finnish composers like Seppo Nummi. He has recorded a lot and his Schubert, Schnittke and Britten discs have had great success.
