Context

Born in 1966 to a family of professional singers she was on stage from nine years old and studied at the Saint Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. Her first passion was for flamenco, but at 19 years old she was noticed by Ricardo Muti. Thus began Her international career. she sang Rossini, Bach, especially Mozart, then the baroque, Vivaldi, Haydn and her curiosity led her to research the less well-known scores such as those of Salieri. Her concepts were a great success and her recordings count amongst the best sellers of our time. She's a mezzo-soprano in fashion, who strikes with the impact, energy and fullness of her voice.

She has a crystal voice. Her latest album covering Vivaldi is breaking sales records. Cecilia Bartoli has inherited her family's passion for singing. She's Italian. She already has all of the qualities of a diva, apparently without any of the flaws. Her portrait: Dominique Barouch, Patrick Voigt.

Conversation while eating a birthday cake. William Christie and Cecilia Bartoli. Have you, in the past, already experienced the same type of relationship with other soloists?
William Christie
Yes, but not with the same intensity that I experience with her.

The prima donna sings like she breathes.

At 15, I started doing singing exercises like this, with my mother. It was more like a game, it wasn't serious at all. And little by little, I discovered that I had an instrument. So it was still a bit amazing: me, I can do things like that? It's not true, this isn't possible.

At the age of 20, Cecilia is discovered by Riccardo Muti, Karajan, Baremboïm. The ingredients of success: talent and heredity, with parents who themselves are soloists at the opera.
Silvana Bartoli
[Italian] I was hoping she would become a musician because I love music. I never would have imagined that she would become a star.

Nothing was easy in this dazzling career. Now 34 years old, she picks out the scores and imposes her audacity.

Taking risks, it still means interpreting, trying to interpret, giving an interpretation. And it's important to do just that. You can't just go up there and perform it. You have to give your own vision of what you feel with regards to the music that you sing.

With her singing, the young diva has seduced the baroque master and draws an ever-growing audience.
